Review : Express Portofino Shirt & High Waist Ponte Knit Skirts

Hi Everyone! During the week before Easter Sunday, many retailers were having major sales both online and in stores. Of the few orders I placed, this one was from Express. Normally, I don't shop at Express much because I find their sizing to either be inconsistent or not petite friendly. I tried many, many times ordering from them in hopes that their 00 would fit, but time and time again, I was let down. I was hesitant in ordering from them again, but I really liked their high waist ponte knit skirts this season. After seeing Kelly from Alterations Needed posting it on Instagram here, I was assured it was petite friendly. I took advantage of their 40% off last weekend with an extra 15% off stackable coupon.

Express High Waist Pleated Ponte Knit Skirt in Black and White, size 00
(After Sales + Coupons : $29.32)
Measurements : Waist 11½" laid flat, Length 17½"

Of all the skirts Express has to offer this season, this one stood out to me the most. I loved the wide black and white stripes on this skirt, it reminds me of the Kate Spade Celina Stripe-Skirt Dress. The black and white stripes of this skirt creates such a crisp contrast. I also really like the ponte knit material for the skirt. It makes it a lot more comfortable and perfect for work or play. For reference, I did iron out the bottom part of the skirt. When I first took the skirt out of the package, it was a little wrinkled and the pleats looked weird on my hips. I was hesitant in ironing the pleats out at first, but I did end up liking the end result. The skirt ended up looking fuller and more flattering. I have yet to wear this out for a full day to test whether the fullness of this skirt stays or fades, but will keep you posted.

(After Sales + Coupons : $29.32)
Measurements : Waist 12" laid flat, Length 18½"

This was the other option I chose from Express, and the one that Kelly tried on. As Kelly mentioned, this is a great dupe of Miss Wu. At first, I ordered this skirt to see which one I like more, the striped one or this one. In the end, I ended up loving both skirts so I'm going to keep them both. I tried this skirt on straight from the box. The pleats on this doesn't fall as weird as the striped one did, so I ended up not ironing this one. Although both skirts are size 00, when measured, this one was half an inch bigger on the waist and an inch longer in length. It isn't noticeable in person, but I just wanted to point out how the sizing from Express is inconsistent, even on products with the same style.

Express Portofino Shirt in Soft Ivory
(After Sales + Coupon : $24.43)
Measurements : Armpit to Armpit 19", Waist 18", Center to Hem 26"

I ordered the Portofino Shirts as filler items for free shipping. I had a really good feeling that these shirts would be swallowing me, but gave it a shot anyways since it looked so nice on the models. *Note to Self : Never compare a 4'11" body to a 5'10" or taller body.* This shirt ended up being way too long for my petite frame, and too loose throughout. This shirt would be going back to Express, no doubt.

Express Portofino Shirt in Warm Stone, size XS
(After Sales + Coupons : $24.43)
Measurements : Armpit to Armpit 18", Waist 17½" ", Center to Hem 26"

This shirt has great reviews on the Express website and definitely has potential for taller ladies out there. If you are interested in picking this up, I have to point out that it is definitely on the sheer side. I had to wear a nude tank top underneath to prevent a big fashion no-no from occurring. Once again, the sizing is inconsistent with these shirts. It's the same style and same size, but in different colors. This one is an inch smaller in the bust, and half an inch smaller in the waist. If a size doesn't fit you in Express, try trying on another shirt in the same size before going the next size up/down. In the end, this shirt is going back as well.

What do you think of the ironed out pleats of the Striped Ponte Knit Skirt? Have you ever ironed out pleats?

Thank you so much for reading! :)

  1. I love that first skirt! It's super cute! There are so many brands that are guilty of the inconsistent sizing issue, including H&M. It's a pain because you have to try on everything before you purchase.

    1. Thanks ! :) I agree, it can be quite frustrating sometimes when sizing are inconsistent and often requires multiple trips/returns!

  3. Great review Christine! I love the black and white striped version best. It made the biggest difference when you ironed out the pleats and I hope your ironing job has staying power in the summer heat/humidity.

I also found that the other style ran a bit bigger. Is it weird I bring my measuring tape with me (it's certainly small enough)? lol The black and white skirt was the only reason I was drawn to Express after not shopping there since college. Alas I passed on both skirts myself. Maybe I won't discount Express anymore and check out what they have to offer from time to time. :)

    1. Thanks Jess! I hope the ironing job stays, we'll see this weekend when I take the skirt out on a stroll. :) Express is definitely not on my go-to list of stores, this one just caught my eye enough for me to stop in to check it out. I must admit, it's been a while since I shopped at Express.

  8. Thanks for the measurements of the shirt. I ordered two in S but was thinking that XS might be more appropriate. I think Express items run a little large. I had to return a dress I ordered in small for an extra-small, and I usually wear 4-6, which I would not consider "extra" small. I frequently shop at Express, but I am 5'9".
