Back to Basics : Black and White with a Pop of Red

Happy Monday Everyone! I just wanted to say a quick hello to start off the week. Stepping away from the bright colors for a day, today I decided to go back to basics in black and white. I think that black and white is such a classic combination that can be complimented with any color. My favorite color to add to the black and white combo is red. Red stands out so nicely against black and white, the attention is really drawn to it. Today, I'm wearing a black and white color block skirt, a recent find from Express, and a plain white t-shirt. I added a nude color belt to create a subtle separation of my upper torso from my bottom half and nude pumps to help elongate the legs. For a pop of color, I went with red lips and my Mini Edie Purse in Flame.

Recently, I purchased this Express Ponte Knit Skirt (see review here), but it was very unflattering when I took it out of the package. I loved contrast between the black and white and I liked the flared/a-line silhouette of this skirt. Taking a tiny risk, I decided to iron out the pleats of this skirt, but was hesitant on how long the iron-effect would last. To my surprise, and a happy one, it lasted a good 5 hours while I was out. I think the ironed out pleats made a big difference to the skirt. It gave me the effect of a fuller bottom which is perfect for my lack of curves body.

Top : H&M size 2, Bottom : Express size 00 (similar here)
Shoes : Ann Taylor size 5, Bag : J. Crew Mini Edie in Flame (buy smaller version here)
Accessories : Belt from J. Crew, Earrings from Banana Republic, Necklace from H&M,
Ring from Kate Spade, Watch from Michael Kors (here)

I love the J. Crew Edie Collection, it comes in a variety of colors and sizes. I love the structure of the bag and how well made it is. The only con to the bag would be the matte leather which is prone to scratches and scuffs. The Edie Purse is loved by many bloggers and the different sizes it has to offer makes it wearable for work or play. My favorite size would have to be the Edie Purse. It's big enough to carry all the little things in my work tote but not overwhelming on my petite frame like the Edie Grand. Here, I'm sporting the Mini Edie which I thought was super adorable when I picked her up. I loved the red color of the bag and saw myself using her time and time again, which I do. I didn't see the Mini Edie this year, but instead, the Teeny Edie. If you're looking for an inexpensive well made crossbody bag, I would definitely recommend this bag.

What do you think of the Black and White combination? What color would you add to it?

Thank you so much for reading and have a great week! :)

  5. The skirt turned out so well! Very clever idea to iron out the pleats! I would've picked red as the pop of color as you did.

  7. How adorable are you? :) Love this outfit and I'm totally pinning this. The pop of red is perfect for such a simple, chic outfit. I think it would look cute with yellow or cobalt blue as a pop of color but the possibilities are endless.
